Patricks on the Beach

We checked into Patricks on the Beach. The beach resort consisting of air-conditioned cottages was bought over and now run by Andreas, a German who married a local girl and settled in Siargao. He named the resort after their first son, Patrick, who is now three years old. The cottage was also renovated with running piped water and flush toilet. Most of them are already fitted with air-conditioning for spoilt city tourists while a few cottages are left untouch for those who prefer the fresh ocean breeze.

We chatted with Andreas and learnt that we have come a little too late for the fishing season. While Siargao is famous for its vicinity to the Philippine Sea where the deep waters there are known to be the deepest in the Pacific and producing some of the best bill fishes in the world. The fishing season proper starts in March to end July. He spoke about the fabulous season this year with the last count totalling 38 blue marlins, the largest was in the 50 kg class, just in this resort itself while I sat drolling from the stories he told.

Anyhow his boatman, Marlon brought us out to sea to show us how the marlin was caught by trolling but the sea proves too much for the 16 HP outrigger that we have to call it a day. The wind was too strong churning up huge waves.

With so much time to spend we decided to tour the island to visit Cloud 9 where the surfing season would start with a bang on the 25th Sepember 2005 hosting the World Surfing Competition on its very shore.

We also visited the market where fresh crabs, huge lobsters, large prawns and tuna fish are sold at a very attractive price. Not wanting to miss out on the bargain, we grabbed ourselves 3 kg of fresh crabs, a couple of lobsters on our way home.
